Plan set to transform funding so English regions no longer rely on Whitehall handouts for projects
As we mentioned in the opening post, Ben Houchen, the Conservative Tees Valley mayor, has indicated he would use so-called “fiscal devolution” to lower the tax burden for his voters. According to a report in The Times, Houchen said he wanted to make his region “a more attractive place and a more competitive place to invest in than Manchester and London”.
The Tees Valley Combined Authority comprises five constituent local authorities: Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, and Stockton-on-Tees. The total population of the area covered is about 700,000.
